Inscription.
On June 11, 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested and processed in St. Augustine during the Monson Motor Lodge civil rights demonstrations. He was transferred to Jacksonville and detained overnight at this site, the former Duval County Jail, before appearing before the United States District Court the following day. Many others were held here during the civil rights era; Dr. King's detention in Jacksonville occurred at a moment when national change was pressing forward.
