Ag Cosaint Pháirc Fhaiche Stiabhna
Fhaiche Stiabhna, thosaigh na hÓglaigh, faoi orduithe ón gCaptaen Christopher Poole, ag tochailt trinsí ag na ceithre phríomhbhealach isteach agus ag bealaí isteach os comhair Shráideanna Dhásain agus Hume. Cuireadh baracáideanna ar na bealaí eile isteach ar thaobhanna na páirce le troscán ón bpáirc.
Tar éis d’fhairtheoirí a bheith curtha i mbun dualgais, rug na hóglaigh taobh istigh de na ráillí greim ar phiocóidí agus ar shluaistí a saoradh ó bhoth Choimeádaí na Páirce agus thosaigh siad ar an tochailt. Thochail siad na trinsí go bhféadfaidís seasamh iontu go leibhéal a gcoime.
Thug ball d’Arm Cathartha na hÉireann, James O’Shea, fianaise (1870–1959) níos déanaí á rá gur,
“Thochail muid ar feadh cúpla uair an chloig agus bhí obair mhaith déanta againn air, chuireamar roinnt tom timpeall air lena cheilt. Rinneamar seilf le haghaidh buamaí agus na ngránghunnaí trí bheith ag gearradh isteach sa chré”
Agus iad ag dúil leis go mbeidís ag fanacht ar feadh i bhfad i bPáirc Fhaiche Stiabhna b’fhéidir, ghabh na hÓglaigh seilbh ar chúisíní le haghaidh na dtrinsí ó theach an Stiúrthóra agus ó charranna a rinne cuid de na baracáidí, go mbeidís a chompordaí agus ab fhéidir sna trinsí.
Defending St Stephen’s Green Park
After the shocked and bewildered people were cleared from St Stephen’s Green Park, the Volunteers under orders from Captain Christopher Poole, set about digging trenches at the four main entrances and at entrances opposite Dawson and Hume Streets. Other side entrances were barricaded with park furniture.
Once sentries had been posted, the Volunteers inside the railings grabbed pick axes and shovels, which had been liberated from the Park Keeper’s shed and started digging. The trenches were roughly waist deep.
Irish Citizen Army member James O’Shea later testified that,
“We dug for a couple of hours and made a nice job of it, putting some bushes around it as camouflage. We made a shelf for bombs and the shotguns by cutting into the earth”.
Perhaps anticipating a long stay in St. Stephen’s Green, the Volunteers commandeered cushions for the trenches from the Superintendent’s house and from cars that formed part of the road barricades, in order to make themselves as comfortable as possible in the trenches.
