Óstán Shelbourne
Sonraíodh Óstán Shelbourne mar fhoirgneamh straitéiseach d’Óglaigh na hÉireann le seilbh a ghabháil air. Bhí an t-óstán lán le haíonna lenár áiríodh oifigigh na Breataine nach raibh ar dualgas agus iad ag baint taitnimh as an deireadh seachtaine saoire bainc. De thoradh nach raibh go leor óglach ann áfach, ní raibh siad in ann an t-óstán a dhaingniú.
Thug Bainisteoir an Óstáin ordú go ndúnfaí agus go ndaingneofaí na doirse tosaigh agus ghluais é a chuid aíonna go cúl an óstáin toisc gur scaoileadh agus gur gortaíodh roinnt díobh agus iad ag ithe a ndinnéir.
Chuir an Captaen Elliotson den 3ú Briogáid Mharcra Cúltaca, le nócha fear a bhí ag iompar raidhfilí, daingean ar bun san óstán i ngan fhios do na hÓglaigh san Fhaiche. Chuir siad meaisínghunna .303 Vickers chun úsáide freisin le radharc amach ar Pháirc Fhaiche Stiabhna, gunna a chrúthaigh a éifeachtacht ag an bhfronta thiar. Bhí raon dhá chiliméadar ag an ngunna sin agus scaoil sé 600 urchar in aghaidh an nóiméid.
Bhí an tÓstán suite in áit ámharach, toisc go raibh go leor áiteanna codlata agus soláthairtí bia ann do shaighdiúirí na Breataine. Thug sé sár-radharc amach ar an bhFaiche freisin.
Ag 4.00am, roimh éirí na gréine, Dé Máirt, an 25 Aibreán, thosaigh saighdiúirí na Breataine ar a bheith ag lámhach ar na hÓglaigh san Fhaiche.
The Shelbourne Hotel
The Shelbourne Hotel (opposite here) was identified as an important strategic building and was to be occupied by the Irish Volunteers. The hotel was full of guests which included off duty British officers enjoying the Bank Holiday weekend. However, insufficient Volunteer numbers resulted in them not being in a position to secure the hotel.
The Hotel Manager ordered the front doors to be closed and secured and he moved his guests to the rear of the hotel as a number of them had been shot and injured while dining.
Captain Elliotson of the 3rd Reserve Calvary Brigade, with ninety men carrying rifles, established a stronghold in the hotel unknown to the Volunteers in the Green. They also deployed a .303 Vickers machine gun overlooking St Stephen’s Green Park. This gun, which had proved its effectiveness on the western front, had a range of two kilometres and fired 600 rounds per minute.
The Hotel was a fortuitous location, as it had abundant sleeping accommodation and food supplies for the British soldiers. It also provided a great vantage point over the Green.
At 4.00am, before dawn, on Tuesday 25th April, British soldiers commenced firing on the Volunteers in the Green.
