1. Príosúnaigh Cogaidh / Prisoners of War Marker
[Gaeilge:]Luan Cásca, an 24 Aibreán, bhailigh an Chuntaois Markievicz eochracha do na tithe gloine chun óglaigh a gortaíodh a choinneáil ann agus ceathrar príosúnach freisin.
Shonraigh an Stiúrthóir Kearney ina thuairisc an Sáirsint Hayden de chuid an Phéas mar cheann de na príosúnaigh cogaidh a gortaíodh go dona agus a tugadh amach chuig ospidéal Dé Máirt.
“chuaigh duine den triúr eile as a mheabhair faoi cheann lá nó dhá agus tugadh chuig ospidéal Naomh Uinseann é ach fuair sé bás roinnt uaireanta an chloig níos déanaí, tharrtháil an t-arm an bheirt phríosúnach a bhí fágtha tráthnóna Dé Sathairn ina dhiaidh agus tugadh iad chuig Óstán Shelbourne”.
Bhí Laurence J. Kettle, Ceannasaí Rannóg Leictreachais Chathair Bhaile Átha Cliath, ar dhuine de na daoine a bhí á gcoinneáil. Aithníodh é agus measadh go bhféadfadh sé a bheith úsáideach ar bhealach éigin do na hÓglaigh sa todhchaí. On Easter Monday, 24th April 1916, Countess Markievicz collected keys for the glasshouses to accommodate wounded Volunteers and also four prisoners of the newly established garrison of St Stephen’s Green.
Amongst those detained was Laurence J. Kettle, Chief of the Dublin City Electricity Department, who was recognised and thought to be of some future use to the Volunteers. He was the only prisoner to be transferred to the College of Surgeons when the Volunteers withdrew there on Tuesday. Laurence was the brother of the poet Thomas Kettle, whose statue is located in the centre of the Green.
Park Superintendent Kearney later reported that he had identified Police Sergeant Hayden as one of the prisoners of war, who was badly wounded and was removed to hospital on Tuesday,
“one of the other three developed insanity in a day or two and was got to Vincent’s hospital but died a few hours later, the remaining two prisoners were rescued by the military on the following Saturday evening and brought to the Shelbourne Hotel”.
