Inscription.   English: Environmental Stewardship at Niagara Parks

As part of its mandate to protect the natural heritage along the Niagara River corridor, environmental stewardship has been a foundational and enduring priority of Niagara Parks since 1885. Niagara Parks' stewardship initiatives rely on research and best practices to manage, protect, and conserve the natural environment throughout the Niagara River corridor. This includes the planting of trees to increase the forest canopy and biodiversity, maintenance of grasslands using prescribed burning, creation of shoreline habitat to support fish species in the Niagara River, removal of invasive species to protect Niagara's native species, and management of sensitive natural areas while providing unique recreational experiences.

Prescribed Burning
In nature, fires help maintain healthy and sustainable natural areas by controlling the spread of invasive species, encouraging the germination of dormant native seeds within the soil, and returning nutrients back into the soil. Prescribed burning was developed as a tool to use fire in a controlled and safe manner to manage natural areas. Indigenous peoples throughout the Americas also used controlled burns to modify their landscapes. Niagara Parks has a trained prescribed burn team and burns multiple grassland habitats each spring to support grassland dependent bird species.
