The same year the first Earth Day helped raise environmental consciousness…
…the Zoo implemented entrance fees. Though controversial at the time, the fees allowed the Zoo to hire its first full-time veterinarian in 1972.

Today, a team of three full-time zoo veterinarians, four registered veterinary technicians, and three dedicated hospital keepers provide medical care for all Zoo residents, from the tiniest tadpole to the largest elephant.
