1. California Ranchos Marker
Inscription. One of the first ranchos created in California was Nuestra Señora del Refugio, which permitted Jose Francisco Ortega, the retired commandante of Santa Barbara presidio, the use of mission lands along the Gaviota coast, beginning about 1797, Ortega's rancho extended some 13 miles from his adobe house in Refugio Canyon as far west as Cojo and included the lower two miles of Gaviota Canyon. Throughout the Spanish colonial and Mexican era similar vast tracts of land continued to be given to prominent soldiers and civilians as a reward for their services, and to encourage them to settle permanently in sparsely populated California. Mexican rancho life was based on raising cattle for their meat, hides, and tallow, a waxy fat used to take candles and soup. At the heart of the rancho was the hacienda, which was both home for the ranchero's family and headquarters for ranch operations. Though romanticized in literature and film as an idealized way of genteel life, ranchos were nonetheless time undisputed centers of society for the widely scattered residents of rural California.
