1. Trumpeter Swans Are Reclaiming Their Habitats Marker
Once found across North America, the trumpeter swan almost vanished because of hunting and habitat loss. By the 1930s, fewer than 100 remained south of Canada.
After being granted federal protection under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, swan restoration and management programs began in the mid-1900s. These efforts have boosted the global trumpeter swan population to more than 63,000 today!
Swan Success Story In Ohio And Beyond
The Columbus Zoo and The Wilds joined the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in efforts to help the species in Ohio. Over three years, The Wilds reintroduced 154 swans back to their native habitats across the state.
Driven nearly to extinction in the early 20th century, Ohio now has almost 900 swans nesting across 26 counties. Due to the success, the species was removed from the state's threatened species list in 2024.
The Columbus Zoo and others are now focused on assisting the Oregon restoration program, which still works to increase the population. Zoos participating in these programs provide cygnets (young swans) for release and funding and resources to
