The Columbus Zoo contributes to conservation projects worldwide. Through the support of private donations, our Conservation Fund assists researchers in the African forest regions who study gorillas, bonobos, okapi, elephants, leopards and more.

Lola Ya Bonobo
Recognizing the desperate situation bonobos face in the wild, the Columbus Zoo has been a long-time supporter of the Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary.

Okapi Conservation Project
Since 1987, the Okapi Conservation Project (OCP) has worked tirelessly to protect wild okapi within their forest habitat in the Democratic Republic of Congo. For many years, the Columbus Zoo has provided financial support for this very important organization.

Mbeli Bai Research Study
Located in the Nouabale-Ndoki National Park in the Republic of Congo, Mbeli Bai is a naturally occurring forest clearing that has been a study site of the western lowland gorilla. Since 1995, continuous monitoring has provided critical life history data of this endangered animal. The Columbus Zoo has supported this research for many years.
