1. Welcome to the Smith Family Homestead Marker

Inscription.
The area enclosed by the fence represents a typical homestead in South Georgia during the era of Reconstruction (1865-1877). Originally located in what was once known as the Ways District in the northeastern section of Thomas County, parts of the modern homestead were relocated to this site by the History Center between the 1970's and the 1990's. Like many farming families in the area, the Smith family was considered to be of the yeoman or middle class. While the homestead may seem plain to modern visitors, the Smith family and others like them were vital in supporting the agricultural economy of Thomas County following the devastation of the Civil War and ensuing economic hardships.
