Inscription. Long before we could drive to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription, people were using plants as medicine. Many plants in the family Salicaceae, including willows (Salix spp.) and poplars and cottonwoods (Populus spp.), contain something called salicylic acid in their bark and leaves. Herbalists from all over the world have used parts of these trees to treat pain and illness for millennia. If you've ever had a bad headache or a fever, you may have taken a synthetic derivative of salicylic acid—aspirin!
