Welcome to Walden & North Park
Visit the “Moose-Viewing Capitol of Colorado”
North Park was home and hunting grounds for Native Americans. By 1840, trappers discovered this area and called it “New Park”. Miners and homesteaders soon followed, searching for gold and fertile land to farm and ranch in the open parklands. As the area was settled, residents named the area Jackson County in 1909, after the seventh president of the United States, Andrew Jackson. In December 1890, the town of Walden was incorporated and named after the first Postmaster, Mark S. Walden. During these prosperous years, New Park gradually became known as “North Park”, being the northern most mountain park in the State of Colorado.
Ranching has always been the heart of North Park. The quiet town of Walden is surrounded by pastoral acres of ranchland which have provided a livelihood for its residents for generations. Roughly 70% of North Park’s 1628 square miles are federal, state, and county land. These lands provide grazing rights and recreation opportunities for residents and visitors, and habitat to the area’s abundant wildlife population.
