Soledad Chávez de Chacón
1889 - 1936
Born in 1889 in Albuquerque, María Soledad Chávez de Chacón was descended from generations of Hispanic New Mexicans involved in local politics and economic activities. Soledad, nicknamed "La La," was elected New Mexico Secretary of State in 1922, making her the first Hispanic woman elected to statewide office in the nation. Soledad again achieved renown in 1924 when, after the lieutenant governor died while the governor was out of state, she assumed the duties of governor and became the first Hispanic woman in the nation to govern a state. In 1934, Soledad was elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives, ultimately the culmination of a successful and vibrant political career.
