Attuck: Sentinal of the Land
Attuck (deer) is sculpted entirely from native timber and driftwood collected in Rhode Island over the course of eight months. His frame is built from a fallen cedar, a sacred material in tribal communities. The enduring strength of Wampanoag people and Northeastern tribes, past and present, is shared in the resilience of our animal relatives like Attuck.
Prior to colonial settlement that drastically altered the Sakonnet landscape, Native communities monitored the local estuaries, meadows, and forests with regenerative harvesting to encourage helpful plants and animals and disallowed practices that could result in harm.
By preserving ancestral knowledge and protecting wildlife we can return to ecological balance. Attuck's endurance through time reminds me of the adaptability and strength that connects all living things.
