Mudge Log Cabin
Dr. Isaac Mudge was born in Blenheim, Ontario in 1822. Isaac later married Abigail Wanch at Canning, Ontario in 1841. Shortly after they were married, the couple moved to Kimball Township, Michigan. Isaac and Abigail had 12 children. Two of Isaac's children, Horace and Franklin worked at the St. Clair County "Poor" Farm. Isaac's grandson, Ray Mudge, ran the Medical Center for close to 40 years.
While living in Kimball Township, Isaac practiced medicine and served as Justice of the Peace (1860). In the early 1860's, Dr. Mudge bought property in Wales Township. During the Civil War, he built this cabin on Card Road. Soon after building his cabin, Isaac was called to duty with the Union Army in Company K, 3rd Michigan Infantry. His son, Horace, served with the 4th Michigan Infantry, Company I.
In 2007, David Mudge, who is the great-great grandson of Isaac Mudge and still lives on the original Mudge farm, donated the cabin to the historic village. In 2008, the cabin was dismantled and moved to the park. Over the next two years, park staff made repairs to the damaged logs and made replacement parts using two dozen harvested White Ash trees that were killed by the Emerald Ash Borer. The harvested trees were hand-hewn to match the original logs. Hewing and assembly was completed using traditional hand tools consisting of a broad ax, adze and framing chisels. Some of the salvaged Ash trees were also taken to a local saw mill where they were cut into lumber for framing, flooring and trim.
Once the cabin was restored, artifacts from the Mudge family, Wales Historical Society and St. Clair County Farm Museum were used to furnish the building.
