Inscription.
Crossing over open ocean and powering onto beaches, these Landing Creaft Mechanized, or LCM, brought men and equipment to war. With a flat bottom and a ramp at the front, these vessels pulled up to the shoreline to unload. They delivered thousands of pounds of equipment, such as a 30-ton tank or several Jeeps. They could also bring nearly 60 men.

This LCM is very similar in design to the LCVP: Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel. While both were designed by Andrew Higgins, the LCVP is better known as a "Higgins boat" and more often carried troops into battle. Over 4,000 landing craft of both types were part of the Allied D-Day invasion.

Landing craft were considered the war's most important tactical equipment. Later, in 1964, President Dwight D. Eisenhower reflected on the boat and its designer, saying "Andrew Higginsis the man who won the war for us."
