1. Old Haymarket Marker
Inscription. The tidal pool ran from the bottom of William Brown Street, along the current Whitechapel & Paradise Street, towards The Strand which formed the original river bank. At low tide it was a mud flat but, when the tide was high, it was deep enough to admit ships. Its increasing shallowness, due to the practice of ships tipping ballast, rendered it treacherous. It was diverted underground in Paradise Street, Thomas Steers transforming its mouth into the first commercial wet dock in the world at the present Canning Place. The ‘Old Dock’ was completed in 1715 and filled in 1826 as the shore line was extended.
