"She Outranks Me"
Mother Mary Bickerdyke (1817-1902)
| — | Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes | — |
Known as "Mother" to soldiers, Unsung Hero Mary Bickerdyke was a Civil War nurse who revolutionized wartime medical care. A veteran of over 19 battles, Mary pledged her allegiance to life and health - not to the North or the South, making her a role model of compassion for all.
In 1862, she attached herself to the Union Army of General Ulysses S. Grant, under whom she was made Chief of Nursing. She followed the Army along the Mississippi River and set up hospitals as they were needed. When Mary joined William Tecumseh Sherman's Union Army for its march to Chattanooga and the first leg of its march to Atlanta, she cooked, cleaned and cared for ill soldiers along the way.
With the help of U.S. Sanitary Commission agents, Mary built approximately 300 field hospitals during the war. She also created new standards in soldier care. Her success was based on her medical skills and her ability to win over the senior ranks of the military. Hearing staff complaints about the outspoken female nurse who consistently disregarded the army's military procedures, General Sherman exclaimed, "She outranks me!"
Mary's tireless zeal earned her the nickname, "Cyclone in Calico." Bickerdyke's pioneering changes in the care of battlefield soldiers made a lasting impact on combat medical care.
