Inscription. Commander of the 10th Indiana Infantry and highest ranked Tippecanoe County officer killed during the Civil War. He died on September 19, 1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga in Tennessee. Colonel Carroll was one of 34,624 casualties of that Confederate victory - second in deaths only to the Battle of Gettysburg. Carroll was a member of the Purdue Rifles militia group (also called the Indiana Legion), financed by John Purdue to guard the home front and Confederate prisoners.
