ed here to decoy the US
Army northward and per-
mit the Indian main body
with women and children
to escape across the riv-
er. Fourteen of the out-
post were shot here wh-
ile trying to surrender.
In 1846 LeGrand Sterling
found twelve human skel-
etons near here.

This is the site where General Atkinson's regular army troops encountered the 20 warriors which Black Hawk had sent as a decoy hoping to give the rest of his people time to cross the river. Meanwhile the militia encountered the rear guard of the Indian band in Battle Hollow.
Grateful appreciation is given to Dr. C.V. Porter whose hard work and dedication preserved this segment of history for all.
