More about this marker. This marker is in the Matthew B. Juan / Ira H. Hayes Veterans Memorial Park. It is a very nice Akimel O'odam (Pima) American Indian veteran memorial park, with a mural-roofed stage. The mural recreates the famous Joe Rosenthal photo, the flag raising on Mt. Surubachi, Iwo Jima Island. Hayes' story is fairly well known. Juan was the first Arizona soldier killed in World War I.
