Marker is on South Crest Road north of East Main Street, on the right when traveling south. This historical marker is located in a residential neighborhood along the western crest of Missionary Ridge, just north of where Interstate 24 cuts through the ridge. More about this marker. According to the description information provided by the National Park Service, the monument is, “7'6" x 4'4" x 4'6" high rectangular slab of dark Quincy granite. Rock-faced sides; polished & inscribed front. 'Illinois' is in large raised letters on beveled top. Marks unit's position at 5:00 p.m. on November 25, 1863.”

My 3rd great grandfather enlisted in I Company of the 100th Illinois as a volunteer. He fought in many incredible battles, including the miraculous climb to the top of Missionary Ridge. With all the harrowing battles, starvation, long marches, horrible weather, and sickness they endured, he refused to give in and fought until he mustered out of the unit in 1865.
