Regarding Mary Gillis Troost. The Gillis Orphans Home was established in 1870. Originally located at 11th and Charlotte Streets in Kansas City, Missouri, it moved at the turn of the century to 22nd Street and Tracy Avenue. As with many institutions of its era, it accepted only white children (per 1910 report). There was an effort in 2006 to renovate former orphanage buildings for affordable senior housing.
