Historic Roadway. . The paved trail is actually the original automobile entrance to the Cedar Point Amusement Park. Built in the early 1900's, this road was one of the first hard surface roads east of the Mississippi River. Lake Erie washed away the section of roadway that ran along the barrier beach and a new road was constructed to the west. This historic road now serves as the hiking trail for more than 80,000 visitors annually at Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve. In the spring of 2000 the Erie County Historical Society dedicated this plaque in honor of the original entrance to Cedar Point. Generous donations to the Natural Areas and Preserves check-off fund allowed the Department of Natural Resources to recreate the entrance utilizing the original gates and fence. . is on Cleveland Road West (U.S. 6) 0.6 miles west of Rye Beach Road (Local Highway 122), on the right when traveling west. The marker stands in a park on the north side of the road, just behind the historic iron gates located between the parking lot and the highway. Touch for map. This marker originally stood just in front of the historic iron gates, only a couple of feet off the ground. A more substantial marker stands in the foreground.
