"Veterans" status was granted to American Merchant Marines for oceangoing services during the period of armed conflict, December 7, 1941 to August 15, 1945 World War II. The Merchant Marine flag flown here and this plaque are in memory of Master William M. Martino and Messman William C. Messick.

General George Washington, in honor of the bravery shown by the Maryland soldiers during the Revolutionary War, declared that when the Maryland flag and the United States flag are displayed on separate flag poles, the flagpoles should be of equal height and the Maryland flag should be approximately the same size as but never larger than The United States flag.
