After withdrawal of Johnston’s army to this side of the river, night of July 9, his forces were posted at various points in this vicinity until Federal movements determined defensive measures. When ascertained, Johnston’s preparations for defense were disrupted by his relief of army command, night of July 17, & the appointment of Hood as his successor.
July 18. Cleburne’s div. & the rest of Hardee’s A.C. were shifted to the valley of Peachtree Creek between Peachtree & Howell Mill Roads.

More about this marker. This marker replaced an earlier marker of the same title and text erected by the Georgia Historical Commission at this location, which had disappeared. The replacement marker was knocked off the post something in early 2009. It leaned against the post for some time, then vanished. The text for the missing marker was taken from “Georgia Historical Markers” (Bay Tree Grove, Second Edition 1978) compiled by Carroll P. Scruggs from the records of the Georgia Historical Commission.
