The Veteran Reserve Guard of Escort accompanied Lincoln's body on the funeral train from Washington D.C. to Illinois. Samuel Carpenter had served as a Corporal in Company H, 35th Missouri Infantry Regiment, and was part of Company K, 7th Veterans Reserve Corps.
