This historic aviation facility is named in honor of longtime medical pathologist, Jackson County coroner, judge, and Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, Charles B. Wheeler. In appreciation of his dedication to air service expansion for the people of the greater Kansas City area, and in recognition of his special contribution to the development of airport facilities.
Erected 2002 by City of Kansas City.

"...The history at the newly rededicated Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport is extensive. Downtown Airport was originally called "Peninsula Field" when chosen by City officials in 1927 as the site of the new City airport. Charles Lindbergh dedicated the airport as "Kansas City Municipal Airport" on August 17, 1927. Lindbergh praised Kansas City at the dedication, indicating that Kansas City had an opportunity to build one of the best airports in the country.
