Location. 34° 55.687′ N, 85° 16.228′ W. Marker is near Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, in Walker County. Memorial can be reached from Vittetoe Road west of Vittetoe-Chickamauga Road when traveling west. This historical marker is located in the northwest section of the Chickamauga National Military Park, near the Snodgrass Hill area of the driving tour, along the part of the battlefield known as Horseshoe Ridge, more specially on Hill #2 of Horseshoe Ridge. To view this historical marker drive to the parking area for Horseshoe Ridge (just beyond the Snodgrass Hill tour stop) and proceed westward on foot, along the southern crest of the ridge for a little more than 0.1 of a mile, to just beyond the high ground on Hill #2, just in the woods beyond the western edge of the clearing. More about this marker. According to the description information provided by the National Park Service, the monument is, “Standard Indiana regimental marker consists of 4' x 4' x 4'8" high rock-faced oolitic stone block with a peaked top and a 12" x 18" bronze plaque affixed to its front. Marks regiment's position on Snodgrass Hill, 9/20/1863 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.”

I used the "Chickamauga Battlefield" map, that I purchased at the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, Visitor Center, to determine both the marker number for this monument and the monument's location in relation to the rest of the park's monuments, markers, and tablets. According to the map it

provides the, "numerical listing of all monuments, markers, and tablets on the Chickamauga Battlefield (using the Chick-Chatt NMP Monument Numbering System).”

Regarding 68th Indiana Infantry. According to the historical tablet for the King's Brigade, the 68th Indiana and the 101st Indiana, "were detached from their Brigade by order of Gen. Thomas, when Reynolds' Division in the withdrawal from the Kelly field had reached the vicinity of the Mullis house on the McFarland Gap road and ordered to report to Gen. Brannan at the Snodgrass house to cover the withdrawal of his portion of the line. Gen. Brannan reported them about 7 o'clock to the Commanding Officer of the 35th Ohio, then holding the right of VanDerveer's Brigade, and they were posted upon this line to the right of the 35th and its supporting line the 9th Indiana."

According to the historic tablet "Close of the Battle," at this late stage of the battle the following took place, "A movement of the Confederates called out a volley which was responded to by them and was then followed by their withdrawal. This was the last firing of the battle. The 68th Indiana, Captain Edmund Finn, and the 101st Indiana, Maj. George W. Steele both under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Doan of the 101st, were soon reported to the commander of the 35th Ohio, and were posted

by him along the crest to the right of this position to cover the withdrawal, the 101st being to the extreme right. VanDerveer's Brigade with the 9th Indiana was then withdrawn by regiments from left to right, and after a short interval the 68th and 101st Indiana, in the order named, followed, covering the movement."
