Inscription. Across the York River in Gloucester County is the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), one of the nation’s leading centers for the interdisciplinary research in coastal oceans and estuarine science. Chartered in 1940 as the Virginia Fisheries Laboratory, the organization was originally located in Yorktown. Construction of the Coleman Bridge, which opened to traffic in 1952, caused the relocation of VIMS to Gloucester Point. Its current campus includes more than 40 acres. The School of Marine Science at VIMS is a graduate school of the College of William and Mary. VIMS is mandated by the Commonwealth of Virginia to conduct research and provide sound scientific advice on the use and conservation of York River and Chesapeake Bay resources, which include blue crabs, oysters, and commercially and recreationally important fishes such as striped bass.
