The statue of Major General John Sedgwick is on the Plain at West Point. It supposedly was cast from a Confederate cannon captured by the 6th Corps.

4. Death of Sedgwick Relief
The back of the statue contains a relief plaque depicting the death of Gen. Sedgwick in Spotsylvania Court House, Va. Sedgwick was the highest ranking Union officer to die on a Civil War battlefield.

5. Spurs of Major General John Sedgwick
According to legend, a cadet that is deficient in academics can visit the Sedgwick Monument in full dress and under arms at midnight the night before the term-end examination. If the cadet spins the rowels on the monument’s spurs (seen in the photo), it will bring good luck which, hopefully, will result in the cadet passing the test.
