1. Fenian Raids Marker
Inscription.
After Civil War, two attempts of Irish patriots to invade Canada and set up a free Irish republic were repulsed between Franklin and Cook's Corners. Fenians gathered in St. Albans, marched via Sheldon to the border but were stopped by Canadian arms and U.S. authorities.
 
Erected 1991 by Vermont Division for Historic Preservation.

Marker is on Vermont Route 105, 0.1 miles west of Sheldon Creek Road, on the right when traveling west. Marker was located next to the bridge that crosses the Missisquoi River. It has been relocated to this new location which is much better and safer. Touch for map. Marker is in this post office area: Sheldon VT 05483, United States of America. Touch for directions.

More about this marker. The State of Vermont has refurbished this historic marker and it has been reinstalled approximately 1/3 mile west of the previous location and at a large pull-off.
At its original location, the marker was difficult to access. There was no path and the shoulder was narrow and the traffic heavy and fast.
