Besides acting as a nursery for fish, crabs, and other wildlife, marshes act as filters and sediment traps to protect the Bay's water quality. They also act as giant sponges for flood control. Preservation of wetlands is one of the most important aspects of keeping the Chesapeake Bay clean and productive.
