1. Description of Monument
The monument cost $4,000 and was sponsored by the Nathan Bedford Forrest Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Frederick Cleveland Hibbard, whose name is on the bronze plaque on the front of the monument, may have designed the entire monument or may have just sculpted the plaque. Frank Teich supplied the stone work for the monument; American Bronze Company cast the statue.
The monument shows a Confederate soldier standing at parade rest. He wears a uniform which includes a soft "campaign" hat. He holds the barrel of a rifle in both hands. The butt of the rifle rests on the plinth in front of his proper right foot. His bedroll is slung across his shoulder and cinched together on his proper right hip. On his proper left hip is a pack, probably containing ammunition. The statue stands upon a granite cube approx. 26 x 24 x 24 inches. Sculpted into the granite
