9. Birthplace Room of Andrew Carnegie
It was in this room that Andrew Carnegie was born on the evening of Wednesday 25 November 1835. Mother, father, and children ate, slept, worked and played in this one room. The room across the passageway was occupied by another family. Water and coal had to be carried up the narrow stairs. Besides cooking and washing for her family, Mrs Carnegie filled the bobbins for her husband's loom and dropped them through a hole in the floor to his workroom below.

11. The Carnegie's Cottage
'The humble home of honest poverty' Andrew Carnegie was born in one of the upstairs rooms of this cottage on the stormy night of 25 November 1835. Although some of the furnishings are from a later period, the layout of the cottage shows how these houses served as home and workplaces for handloom weavers like the Carnegie's. They shared the space with another family, each having two handlooms on the ground floor and one all-purpose room above. Many such houses were built when hand-weaving was flourishing in the 18th century. By the mid-19th century it was a different story: epidemics, steam-powered looms and depressed markets meant that life in Dumfermline was a struggle.
