2. Marker on Old Fort Street
Fort Edward was built in 1755 in a wilderness area that the Indians called the "Great Carrying Place" due to the fact that they had to carry their canoes overland from the Hudson River to Lake Champlain.

This is the remains of the old moat that was part of the outworks of Fort Edward. They are found just east of the marker.
