"Just before day on Sunday morning those of us on post nearest the Warrenton Turnpike heard the enemy approaching. We gave the alarm, and in a few minutes the regiment was formed in line of battle on the hill overlooking the Stone Bridge. Just at six o'clock the enemy fired their first gun (a cannon). It went over us, and in a few moments a regular firing was going on."

3. Evans' Brigade Initial Position
Looking west down Lee Highway (the old Warrenton Turnpike). On the morning of the 21st, the 4th South Carolina occupied the high ground overlooking the road and blocking any attempt to cross the Stone Bridge.

4. 4th South Carolina Skirmishers
Looking to the east from the high ground. Several companies of the 4th South Carolina were deployed as skirmishers fanned out across the low ground to the west of the Stone Bridge.
