Libertador, no mueren. Cierran los ojos y se quedan velando.
Miguel Angel Asturias

English translation:

Simón Bolívar
Venezuela · Colombia · Ecuador · Peru · Bolivia · Panamá

The sovereignty of the People is the only legitimate authority over nations.

Creed
I believe in liberty, mother of the Americas.
Creator of sweet seas on the earth
and in Bolívar, her son and our Father,
who was born in Venezuela, suffered
under the power of the Spanish, was fought
and thought himself dead at Chimborazo
and with the iris he descended into hell
and awakening the voice of Colombia
he touched eternity with his hands and
is at the right hand of God.
Don’t judge us, Bolívar, until the judgement day,
because we believe in the communion of all those that
share with the people, because only the people
make mankind free. We proclaim
a war to the death with no mercy for tyrants.
We believe in the resurrection of the heroes
and in the everlasting life of those like you,
Liberator, that never die. Real heroes only close their eyes and continue to watch over us.

3. Simón Bolivar Marker
Every country in Latin America has a memorial to Simón Bolívar, the leader of the original independence movement of South America against Spain. The six nations formed from the area he liberated are shown here as part of the text, which is typical for many monuments to him. Interestingly, the monument commission also chose to include the "Credo" ("Creed") by Miguel Angel Asturias, the Guatemalan Nobel Prize winning author. Asturias wrote this poem in 1954 from Buenos Aires, Argentina, most likely as a response to a similar poem written by Chilean poet Pablo Neruda in 1950 ("Canto a Bolívar"). The poems are obviously a play on the wording of the Apostle's Creed, which many then and now have found to be offensive or controversial. However, ultimately the poems also emphasize the importance that Bolívar has on the psyche of Latin Americans and their history.
