Regarding Friar Juan de San Miguel. Friar Juan de San Miguel founded the town in 1542 under the name San Miguel el Grande. At the time of its founding it was the northernmost Spanish settlement in New Spain. It soon grew in importance when silver was discovered nearby in Zacatecas and Guanajuato, becoming part of the Royal Road (Camino Real de Tierra Adentro) that was used to send supplies to the mines and to transport silver and other metals.
