On 4 August 1945 the U.S.S. Mapiro departed Pearl Harbor to begin her first patrol. She arrived at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 15 August 1945, the day the Japanese Government surrendered. The Mapiro returned to the San Francisco Bay area and on 16 March 1946 was decommissioned. On 18 March 1960 she was transferred to Turkey where she served under the name, Piri Reis.
