Inscription.

Keel Laid 22 July 1944
Launched 17 January 1945
Commissioned 17 August 1945

On 19 November 1945 the U.S.S. Mero departed Manitowoc. The Mero was the last of 28 submarines built at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company. She was not destined to see action in the war in the Pacific because hostilities had ceased before she was ready for her intended role. Although Mero never had a chance to serve her country in time of war, she was transferred to Turkey on 10 April 1960 where she served under the name, Hizir Reis.
