The Freedom Tree project began in the late Vietnam War era and continued in the immediate post-war to remember those Prisoners of War and Missing in Action and to seek a full accounting as public interest began to wane following U.S. disengagement in Southeast Asia. As of 2023, nearly 81,000 American service members remain missing from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and other conflicts involving the U.S.
