Stela 9 at Lamanai. .
Stela 9. This monument was erected at the end of the Middle Classic Period (600-800 CE). Stela 9 depicts Lord “Smoking Shell” holding a double headed ceremonial bar diagonally across his chest. The headdress depicted on this monument has typical traits of the Early Classic Period (250-600 CE). Stela 9 was placed on the primary axis of a room within structure N10-27 which is unusual in the Maya lowlands. At the base of Stela 9, the remains of five children were recovered, associated with chert, shell, and obsidian items. . This historical marker was erected by Department of Archaeology. Location. 17° 45.989′ N, 88° 39.135′ W. Marker is in Indian Church, Orange Walk. The marker is directly in front of Temple N10-27, some 700 meters north of the visitors center at the Lamanai Archaeological Site. Touch for map. Marker is in this post office
