Sitios Arqueológicos del Sur
Chacchoben

El diseño arquitectónico dominante de las estructuras es del estilo Petén: cuerpos superpuestos con muros en talud, con esquinas redondeadas y remetidas, cuyo elemento esencial es la … llamada “en delantal”. layout was made and the construction of most of the structures that make up the core of the settlement, of 70 hectares, where public architectural complexes are located together with buildings of civic, religious and administrative functions. The site includes Petén stylistic patterns and the site continued its growth and development for 500 years. Subsequently, it experienced a possible population decline and virtual abandonment. Finally, in the late Postclassic period (1200-1450 CE), some civic and religious spaces were rehabilitated, which could indicate at least partial repopulation. The only two stelae with hieroglyphic inscriptions found to date are illegible, so it can only be assumed that Chacchoben was an important site linked to some larger regional capital.

It is located 9 kilometers from the exit in Federal Highway 307 Chetumal-Cancún and on the left of Federal Highway 297, known as "the shortcut" to Merida. The entrance to the site is 5 kilometers northwest of the town of Lázaro Cárdenas.

Dzibanche - Kinichna
The Dzibanché - Kinichná complex is located in a transitional zone between the low jungle and the tropical rainforest of Petén. The settlement covers an area of more than 40 km2 and consists of four genres of monumental architecture: Dzibanché or Main Group, Central Complex ... amay, Tutil and Kinichná, groups that had specific functions, all interconnected by sacbés or white Mayan roads. The existence of hieroglyphic texts found in the monuments of the staircase of the Temple of the Captives and ... of sumptuous offerings in burial chambers, indicate that Dzibanché was involved in the conquest of several other areas, warlike conquests carried out by several rulers of the Kaan family over more than two centuries. The occupation sequence of Dzibanché has its beginnings in the Late Preclassic (300 CE) and the settlement reached its maximum population in the Classic (400-700), whose population lasted until the Late Postclassic (1500 CE).

The site is reached by Federal Highway 186 (Chetumal-Escárcega), until an exit at kilometer 215.5 that leads by an asphalted road to the towns of Morocoy and San Pedro Peralta. Passing Morocoy, at the place known as "La Pista", take the detour that leads to the site, seven kilometers to the east along a paved road that leads directly to the archaeological zone.

Oxtankah
Oxtankah is the largest and most important prehispanic city that has been discovered in the Chetumal Bay. The first Mayan groups settled in Oxtankah around 600 BCE, staying there until 1100 CE. The maximum prosperity of its socio-political system was reached during the early Classic, when the leading groups of Oxtankah served as rectors of the surrounding towns, reflecting their power even in architecture. The dominant architectural design of the structures is the Petén style: bodies superimposed with sloped walls, with rounded and tucked corners, whose essential element is the so-called "apron". Upon the arrival of the Spaniards, Oxtankah had been abandoned for years.

To get to the site, take the Chetumal-Calderitas paved road that borders the bay; at 4.5 kilometers is a sign that marks the access to the site. The journey from Chetumal should take an approximate time of 25 minutes.

Kohunlich
This site is made up of habitations and civic and ceremonial architectural complexes, surrounded by fertile lands for cultivation, located in an area of 14 km2. The first occupation of Kohunlich was during the Late Preclassic (300 BCE - 250 CE) and during this stage were built low platforms around the Ya'axná Square, buildings that were covered in the Early Classic monumental buildings. During this period, the Temple of the Masks was erected. Its iconography represents real characters, dressed with ornaments related to the sun. During the Late Classic (600-900 CE), Kohunlich reached its maximum population and during this period were built most of the ... that today can be seen. The growth of the settlement continued into the early Postclassic (1000-1200 CE).

To visit the Kohunlich archaeological zone take Federal Highway 186 (Chetumal–Escárcega),continuing until the town of Francisco Villa, and from there taking the exit that after 9 kilometers leads to the archaeological zone.
