1. Adams County Almshouse Marker
Inscription. The Adams County Almshouse opened in 1819 to shelter the poor, sick, and mentally insane. The almshouse complex was initially located on 91 acres of farmland that was used by the residents to sustain themselves by raising livestock, fruits and vegetables. Fighting occurred here during the first day of the Battles of Gettysburg. The almshouse barn was used as a hospital for the wounded. The complex closed in 1964, the barn was destroyed by fire in 1967, and the last building was demolished in 1974. In 1999, the Adams County Agricultural and Natural Resources Center was built. Agriculture continues to play an important economic and cultural role in Adams County.
