Welcome to Strawtown Koteewi Park
— Strawtown Koteewi Park —
The park's name evokes its natural prairie environment and pays homage to Native American people who once occupied this site. This unique environment, nurtured by the White River, has served as an ecological and cultural crossroads throughout time. The story of Strawtown Koteewi Park is intricately linked with the White River. Once known for its pristine nearly crystal-clear water, the river's earliest documented name was "Wappi-hanpe" which directly translates to "White River." Here at Strawtown Koteewi Park, the river sustained a unique balance of rich woodlands, lush wetlands, and a vast prairie. Attracted by the natural abundance of this land, various Native American and European cultures spanning throughout several thousands of years migrated through and settled here. The story of Strawtown Koteewi Park is still developing. Since the land's acquisition as a Hamilton County Park, its history and diversity are being preserved and restored for present and future generations.
