The Fleckenstein - Coccaro Grocery Store 1839 - 1965 Catherine's Palace 1909 - 1965.

Built in 1839 in the Greek Revival style by Christian Fleckenstein of Bavaria, Germany with a Grocery Store on the main second floor, a kitchen cooking wood burning fireplace in the basement, and a home on the top floor heated on top two floors by seven coal burning fireplaces. A bathroom and cistern were located outside.

Witnessed in May 1863 Lt. General John C. Pemberton's Confederate Army of Vicksburg marching out to defend the city from invaders and their chaotic return. On July 4, 1863, witnessed the triumphant entrance into the city of Major General U. S. Grant's Union Army of the Tennessee. Three Fleckenstein sons were born in the top floor home, and the older sons became Confederate soldiers. One died during the invasion and destruction of Atlanta, GA in 1864 and is buried there in an unmarked grave. The youngest, 15 year old son was killed in 1864, when he stepped on an unexploded artillery shell during the Federal Occupation of Vicksburg,

In 1905-06, the building was purchased as a grocery store and home by Joseph Coccaro of Italy. In 1909 Joseph married Catherine Russo Coccaro in Italy and about 1920, they created “Catherine's Palace", by adding to the top floor a kitchen, bathroom, electricity, gas and a roof over the top east front porch, with elegant furnishings. In 1950, an elevator was placed in the galleried east front porch to complete Catherine's Palace. After the death of Catherine in 1965, Jack and Jill Children's Daycare opened for 20 years and in 1985, the building became rental apartments.
