Boca Negra Canyon
Boca Negra, the “black mouth,” is considered the birthplace of Petroglyph National Monument. Through the efforts of private citizen groups in the 1960s, this area became Indian Petroglyph State Park, which later became the focal point for the establishment of today's national monument.

The National Park Service, the City of Albuquerque, and the State of New Mexico are mandated to protect and preserve these images for future generations. You can help by leaving as little trace of your visit as possible.

2. An Outdoor Gallery Marker
This additional non-historical marker reads: The ageless symbols scratched and abraded into these mineral-stained rocks reflect the lifeways of cultures rooted to this land. They give us a glimpse into the past and a bridge into the future. But today bullet holes and graffiti mar some of these ancient works. America’s heritage deserves better. Please help by looking but not touching.
