The story of the Anacostia River pulses with the same sad cycles of abuse and neglect that define the stories of rivers across America.
Our alteration of the Anacostia has affected everyone in the watershed and beyond, from the Anacostia headwaters in Maryland, past its confluence with the Potomac River, and ultimately to the Chesapeake Bay. But there is more to the tragedy. There is richness, resilience, and hope.
This exhibit explores a year of life in the Anacostia River watershed, offering a glimpse into the river's eons of evolution and natural history, centuries of destruction, and most recently, decades of the combined restoration efforts of local citizens, advocacy organizations, and government organizations, and government agencies. It asks viewers to consider what the river means to them and what they might do to help it heal.
The exhibit was curated by Krista Schlyer, a DC-based photographer and writer who has documented the Anacostia since 2010. These photos and more can be found in her award-winning book, River of Redemption: Almanac of Life on the Anacostia. You can find the book in local bookstores and libraries, including Solid State Books, Politics and Prose, and Kramerbooks, as well as online booksellers.
