Inscription. On nightly news programs and in newspapers, the images of Birmingham children under police attack shocked and sickened the nation. It was the reaction that “Project C” organizers had hoped for. The "Children's Crusade” revived the Birmingham Campaign, helping it regain momentum and sensational press coverage. Parents and community leaders feared for the children's safety. Despite the risks, the children kept coming, and police continued using hoses, dogs and tanks to suppress them. Thousands of children, along with others, would be arrested and jailed.

A young man runs as Birmingham police bring out their tank, and firemen use high-pressure water hoses to scatter and stop the marchers. Blasts from the hoses are so strong that they strip bark off trees, tear clothes off protestors, and knock people up in the air or down the same city streets where you now stand.
